Moog Musical Saw - Revitalizing a lost instrument, the musical saw, by finding harmony between its humble beginnings and the technologically advanced age of today.
Brand Research - “Here at the beginning of the 21st century Moog Music is still producing the quality tools to create music that could not otherwise exist without them, making instruments so unique that they represent a genre of their own: Moog Music.”
- Moog
Market: Experimental Musicians - This particular market can be broken up into two groups: gear-junkies and experimentalists. The difference lies in their preference of instruments: one towards electronics, the other towards vintage/experimental equipment. Essentially, they are musicians striving to create unique and original sounds by utilizing whatever instruments they can get their hands on for the sake of musical exploration.
Ideations - Like with every project, early ideations begin with exploring a variety of ideas, In this case, the subject was musical instruments. A design direction was chosen from the initial sketches. The musical saw was felt to be most unique, given its signature sound and awkward manner which it is performed.
Ideations - Each sketch possessed certain qualities which, in the end were collected into a final design for further development through digital modeling. A final look was fleshed out after completing a series of marker renderings, digital mockups, as well as physical models.
Final Design - The Moog saw combines elegance with simplicity to create a very clean yet functional design. The mounted blade allows the user to perform while standing thus allowing for a more picturesque presence during performance. The integration of an electric sound box offers the option to connect the instrument to an amplifier. Additional features include knobs for adjusting pitch and frequency levels to create vibrato effects.
