BA(Hons) Degree in Product Design and NVQ ME&CAD
Plymouth, United Kingdom
As a designer, finding the balance between functionality and aesthetics is the key to beautiful design. Through understanding and development, rather than compromise in the manufacturing process, I aim to create objects that are more refined and more holistic in their being. As a result, I hope that people find enjoyment through their use, and gratification from their ownership.

Innovative communication device for working from home
For part of the week I am currently working for John Makepeace, a furniture designer based in Dorset. Using computer-aided design to visualize and detail his designs sooner, has allowed for earlier product development and visuals for his clients.
Prior to this I worked for Zipbar, a stainless steel fabrication company based in Plymouth that recently supplied the portable and professional bar stations for the 2012 VIP Olympics. Within this company I played an important role in the design and development of new units and the minimizing of production time. Although I was offered a full time position in the company I chose to further my career development in other directions.
During my second year in university I designed a wine rack that until recently, was for sale at Seale-Hayne gallery in Newton Abbot and on display at Bistro One in Plymouth where it has received very positive reviews.
Again in my second year I was chosen by my university to collaborate with Karen Hansen, a furniture designer, to advise her on manufacturing and CNC opportunities for her designs whilst sticking strongly to her design identity. Out of university I spent the summer generating CAD data of her hand-made designs that has resulted in the machining of full-scale components and Reprap prototypes. Please see attached reference.
In my final year I was given the opportunity to exhibit at the 2011 Kitchen Bedroom and Bathroom Show in Birmingham NEC. This helped me to refine my communication and displaying skills within a professional environment.
I feel that my balanced approach to the design process and ability to recognize, define and solve problems quickly makes me a positive asset to any design team.
I would value the opportunity to work with a company that will test and develop my design ability along with guiding me towards new and innovative ways of coming to design solutions.
I have recently finished a BA (Hons) Degree in Product Design (CSD Accredited).
My NVQ in Mechanical Engineering and Computer Aided design at Exeter College covered many aspects of engineering. This helped me enormously throughout my studies at university with; material selection, manufacturing processes, Technical drawing and understanding the principles of fluid dynamics amongst other things.
Utilizing my mechanical engineering knowledge enables me to reverse engineer and design out problems within a product and as a result I feel that my career will take me comfortably between Product and Industrial Design.
I can use a variety of CAD software packages but I firmly believe that prototyping and testing is what makes a refined and considered design.
I have been using Adobe CS5 creative suite for the last four years.
Solid Works has been my main CAD software for the last four years yet I have been using it for the last six years.
Autodesk Inventor was my primary CAD/CAM software while I was at college.
I have been trained on AutoCAD 2D prior to gaining work experience with a engineering consultancy.
From experience I have learnt to use Keyshot 3 and Photoview 360 along with other plug-in rendering programs.
I am able to use both PC and Mac operating systems and am competent with both Microsoft Office and iWork.
My model making and hand drawing skills are of a professional standard yet I would like to continually improve all of my skills to a level that is outstanding.
