The idea behind this project was to redesign an HTC Pocket PC in a way that would utilize more efficient and economical manufacturing processes including fewer tooling parts and side actions. While the design itself was intended to give the illusion of a sleeker and slimmer device than the original, there was no target market in mind due to the overwhelming success of other devices currently in the market that utilized more advanced technology and integration such as the Apple iPhone.
These are a few of the original concept sketches done mostly in freehand from which I chose two main concepts to progress to the next step in the design process.
The next step was to create some foam models in order to get a good sense of surfacing and comfort. Also I created a few Photoshop renderings of the final two concept sketches in order to see what the device could look like in a gunmetal or silver finish.
Finally, I broke down the original device, categorized and dimensioned all of the original components that I would be reusing, and began building them in CAD using both SolidWorks and Rhinoceros in unison to save some time. Soon I hope to have a working prototype of the design made from ABS plastic.
