Heavy Metal Embrace

Heavy Metal Embrace is a chair that merges the multiple desires for comfort, durability and aesthetics into a single object for an outcome that is both intensely industrial and domestically inviting. Beginning with the body and strips of flexible plastic, the chair design was both inspired by and emerges from the proportions of the body and was then taken through various material types before reaching its final configuration in bent metal. Each step in the process effected the subsequent, as full scale prototypes were tested with materials of different capacities - plastic, paper, chipboard, cardboard, aluminum, steel - the form continuously adapted itself to the various material limits.

The final prototype eliminates all unnecessary pieces and connections, combining legs, seat, back and arms into one overlapping bolt connection at the armrest. All pieces were laser cut from a single sheet of stainless steel and bent into a shape that provides stability and support.
