Ever since I have been infected by the fascination of art, I have been sketching and sculpting the things my imagination spewed forth.
After majoring in Art Direction for one year, I decided to study industrial design simply because I found it to be the perfect way of learning the art of problem solving. I moved to the U.S, where I received the first two years of my design education at the California State University in Long Beach, CA.
I then transferred to Istanbul Technical University in 2003-2007, where I received my Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Design.
After working in the industry for a couple of years, I moved to Umeå, a small Northern Swedish city right below the polar circle. The city was full of very nice and talented people and a very impressive academic environment in terms of both design and other academic branches. I have recently graduated with a Master’s Degree in Advanced Product Design from Umea Institute of Design. In Umeå, I had the privilege to work with a very talented and multinational band of transport, interaction and product designers and academic staff.
My ultimate motive is to understand and communicate with the rest of the cosmos, which is the reason why I am such an enthusiastic follower of each field of Science, Technology, Culture and History. I love listening and learning from others and I adopt universal mechanics as my guide. Universe does not have one way of moving its projects forward; so, neither do I. I like combining different ways of thinking and application with different kinds of media. Looking at the unlikeliest of places have has always let me create unique and cultivated backgrounds for my projects, strategize and plan further steps confidently.
As a developing designer look forward to being a part of design teams that develop projects, concepts and products that will grant us, the humankind, valuable and entertaining vision of a better and sustainable future.
As a curious child of nature, I find every single subject in my humble scrutiny somehow related to each other in a harmonically simple complexity. This has always provoked a gripping need of experimentation for understanding in me. Over the years, I filled my toolbox with as many different design tools as possible and trained myself to use them comfortably. This has so far allowed me the luxury of being experimental, thus understand faster to achieve creative results with ease.
During my masters studies, research and user centered design became the essential steer of my design methodology. My experiences have shown me that, being familiar with the user's profile, work habits, company branding, related market, budget, social and cultural aspects analyzed in the light of past and future projections, makes a huge difference in the final design. I prefer to observe and extract knowledge myself because it enables me to get a close comprehension of the subject. This results in a wider vision and only with this vision come unique and smart solutions.
I am a strong believer of teamwork. By ''team'' I do not mean a random group of people bunched up together and is expected to be creative and productive. Instead, I refer to a group of select people of varied cultures and disciplines, strategically brought together to think, produce and contribute to the common goal of the team with their expertise. I say, looking at a surface from different angles with different filters allows us to spot intriguing highlights of its features.
During my studies in U.I.D, I had the honor of being the colleague of a multicultural and multidisciplinary gang of very talented designers. Working with them has shown me the wide spectrum of approaches to the art of problem solving. Throughout the projects, I've had the privilege of being tutored by some of the best designers of Denmark and Sweden. I worked with noteworthy sponsors such as Philips, Umea Hospital, Umea Fire Brigade and also witnessed my colleagues' works with other well known brands. During my internships, I had the opportunity to work with prestigious firms such as Atlas Copco, Volkswagen, Astro Studios, CA and took part in stimulating design projects. All these involvements have contributed to the development of my design approach and methodology. Finally, an intense MA degree project term with Atlas Copco, pushed my design skills up to a competent level.
The question of "how?" is a fundamental part of any design process, so it naturally is my primary concern when I design. Nonetheless, after years of working with talented and creative social scientists like historians and linguists on concept design, I got used to realize another essential question, which is occasionally overlooked by many designers, who get carried away by the thrill of the creative design process. It is the question of "why?"... This approach of causality has served me well so many times that I got used to perceive it as a mandatory component of designing.
I believe, design is not solely the final product itself. Design is made of the broad conceptual background shaped by cultural, sociological, strategic and philosophical inputs. In that sense, I see the creation of a fantasy or fictional game setting no different than creating a fire rescue helmet, or a construction recycle robot or a consumer product. Because, as I have witnessed in my design experiences, these all need the very same methodology and way of thinking, in order to become reality.
