Overview - When a patient is admitted to the ICU, it is necessary for family members to serve as the patient’s advocates. However, clinician-family communication in the ICU fails to meet the basic standards of informed decision-making. Studies showed that only half of surrogate family members sufficiently understand the patient’s condition and treatment options. Shared decision-making is a critical component of quality care that hinges on effective methods of clinician-family communication.
Details - EduCare is a multi-functional communication device to enhance 2-way information flow between physicians and family members. Family members can submit questions through the online portal. Physicians will then select questions that will be answered during the next scheduled Q&A sessions. The physicians can also upload appropriate educational materials and archive them into the system beforehand. The actual session then occurs in-room and is recorded and stored for later review.
