Work Experience: Alcatel Lucent (Aust). October – December 2006

This work experience was undertaken during my final months at TAFE studying mechanical technology. I joined Alcatels Access Network Division which is their R&D team in Australia. The project that was underway at the time was the design of a roadside equipment cabinet to provide ADSL broadband internet for Telstra.

The design included all internal electronics as well as the actual cabinet and supporting manual and guides. When I arrived the team was in the process of assembling pre-production prototypes of both electrical and mechanical sub assemblies. These prototypes where being used in a completed housing to test for failure through heat, water, fire, insects and dust. My task was to assemble electrical units such as power units and switching modules so that it could free up the engineers for more challenging work. I was given a schematic and access to the testing lab and told to assemble the various electrical units and components. These where then checked off and tested by my supervisors.

In the process of assembling the parts as they arrived from the factory I was also charged with noting all difficulties I experienced such as hole spacing errors and fit issues, and then to modify the existing plans and documents to the modifications. I also drew up some Autocad drawing and wiring diagrams of some sub assemblies that had not been done yet. I also created BOMs for all of the units I had assembled.
