Industrial Designer — Adelaide-Beijing, Australia
Andrew Rogers, principal designer and founder of Andrew Rogers Industrial Designer (ARID), I founded ARID in 1988. For over twenty five years, I have personally designed and delivered to market more than 300 products. My designs have a wide coverage, involving mechanical equipment, electrical and electronic products, tools, medical equipment, communication devices, home appliances, vehicles, toys, furniture and jewellery, many of which have been awarded patents and won design awards
I have spent the last 30 years designing and developing products for a diverse range of customers from all over the world, projects I have worked on vary in scale from aviation refuelling facilities for commercial jets in remote locations to the design and packaging of microscopic injecting pipets used during the process of in vitro fertilisation, from domestic cooking ware and sanitary products (bathroom products ) to specialist industrial process machinery , and that vary in significance from nation level security communication equipment to disposable cutlery.
While my role in these projects has been varied it is rare that I am restricted to Design, In most cases and more so in recent times I have been responsible for leading my clients into new technologies, methods of production and to seek new niche markets. My role has grown to include material and colour selection and specification, quality control including fit and finish, design and construction of inspection tools, design and specification of production methods and tooling, selection and supervision of toolmakers and production facilities supervision inspection.
I have a Design studio in Adelaide and a small satellite facility in Beijing, I have purpose built these facilities from scratch to assist in the design testing and evaluation of the products I have worked on over the years. These facilities were specifically built to allow me to not only experiment with the design process but also understand and document the manufacturing processes, develop assembly and quality control training material that can be used in the production process for teaching assembly staff. Please have a look at this video I prepared http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FIul4cUSlcI or if in China http://blog.sina.com.cn/andrewrogersdesigner although it is a few years old now it documents the process I usually undertake while working on a new product, the whole product was designed built in my facility and remained secret until we were ready for release in Milan Paris and Sydney, I was responsible for all aspects of this project including writing and directing the training for the production, the assembly and installation manual and the user interface for the computer programme.
In many cases my role has extended far beyond that of designer, I have in the past not only found suppliers but also other professionals (electronic engineers programmers marketing people etc) and even investors and customers. I have be required to and successfully facilitated technology transfer, assignment of intellectual property and driven the project time line and enforced deadlines including ensuring decisions are made in good time. Pushing the boundaries more than a turnkey product design service I offer a total product solution.
