Senior Designer, UKiP Media & Events
I work as an integral member of a ten person in-house design team of a highly successful international exhibitions and B2B magazine publishing company. UKiP Media & Events (UKiPME) produces 25 quarterly B2B magazine titles as well as over 15 international exhibitions, covering a variety of industries and topics. Each exhibition has their own marketing campaign, which uses many print formats (flyers, newsletters, posters, showguides and exhibition signage) as well as online digital assets (websites, email campaigns, web banners and icons). All of which I create designs for on a daily basis. I am the Art Editor for 2 of the quarterly B2B magazines, directly responsible for the overall quality, brand and unity of all elements involved.
I regularly present my creative ideas and concepts to the Art Directors, on occasion with the Managing Director and company CEO. I do this with confidence and honesty whilst having the ability to use all feedback I receive constructively. I effectively manage working relationships through all channels of communication, including by phone, email and meetings. This ranges from clients, to printers, and colleagues within the company.
I was responsible for the development and supervision of quality for a selection of our existing exhibition websites for 4 years. These have now been taken over by our in-house web team, although I still create assets for the websites. I also create marketing html email shots to promote the exhibitions and magazines.
All of the magazines and exhibitions at UKiPME have strong, well established and successful brand identities. I recently re-designed our longest standing magazine, working along side my Art Director. The new style has received recognition from the whole company including the Directors and CEO, and has proved to be a huge success in bringing in more income via advertising through future issues.
September 2000 - August 2003
Designer, UKiP Media & Events
I was offered this job after a successful trial period whilst working one day a week during my last year of college.
I chose to take this job instead of attending university, for which I had been accepted later that year. My responsibilities included designing the signage and marketing material for over 15 exhibitions. This included flyers, conference programmes and show guides. I also created any client advertisements needed for many of our publications.
January 2005 - to date
I have created an array of design work on a freelance basis. This includes advertisements, business cards, promotional flyers, identities, web banners, websites, illustrations and app icons. One of my most frequent clients is Oxfam. I particularly enjoy freelance illustration and app design. I love reading a concept, and interpreting it in my own, illustrative style. My most recent freelance project was for Oxford New Media. It involved creating a design for a new app called CopyWriter, which you can see in my portfolio.
The design team at UKiPME were shortlisted for two categories at the Magazine Design Awards in 2005. The categories were ‘Best use of illustration in a B2B magazine’ and ‘Best B2B magazine design’, both of which I worked on throughout the year. Unfortunately, we were runner-up in both categories, but it was a privilege and a great experience to be involved in the process.
In 2009, out of over 150 employees, I won the company’s ‘Dreams Come True’ competition. I won a trip to South America for 4 weeks, all expenses paid. The prize was decided by the company’s 5 directors, based on each individual’s outstanding contribution to the company and commitment to their job. Only 5 people out of the company have won this to date.
Outside of my career, I attended Camp America when I was 19 in 1999. I spent a summer (6 weeks) looking after children as a senior counsellor, over-looking a whole year of kids aged 9-10, as well as 10 other counsellors. At a young age I found the whole experience eye-opening and felt I learnt a great deal in a short space of time.
I have completed several half marathons, whilst raising money for charity. These include Reading Half Marathon and Royal Parks Half Marathon. I am currently in training for the 2013 London Marathon, of which I have a confirmed place with Oxfam.
