Re-design of the Birdie Patient Lift in collaboration with Invacare Corporation. The project was executed together with I. Hoffart, F. Schoenmaker and B. Vrijling. We had to re-design the Birdie patient-lift resulting in a 30% lighter and more user-friendly product without making concessions to the cost-price.

design guidelines - In addition to reducing the weight we envisioned the re-design to be comfortable, safe, causing less strain for the care-giver and giving a positive emotional experience for the patient. This vision was translated into shape and material characteristics.

In collaboration with Invacare a concept was chosen that was worked out in more detail. This was an iterative process at which design sketches, rough calculations, prototypes and CAD software were used parallel to arrive at the final result.

usage - The patient-lift is foldable for transport and storage. The folding mechanism is design in such a way that the care-giver does not have to stoop.
