Freelance Industrial Designer
Here examples of projects I have been involved in:
Teardrop Caravan - Designed a 1940's inspired Teardrop Caravan complete with kitchenette, double bed and storage for clothes, food and spare wheel. Includes custom steel chassis and CNC machined plywood superstructure. The parts are supplied flat packed and assembled by the owner using screws and glue. Skin available in raw aluminium or in glass fibre sheet. Built 3 full scale working prototypes by hand; they have been extensively field tested in Tasmania, SA, WA and NSW. Designed and built plug for glass fibre tailgate mould, which includes geodesic stiffening against torsion and is moulded to accept tail lights, bar lock and number plate. Designed all bracketing for gas struts, hinges and latch mechanism.
Pixalux Light Panel - Helped with developing an astonishing new lighting product. Invented an algorithm for distributing ink patterns with a controlled surface area, which is at the core of the new technology.
Model plane motor mount - Designed a mount that joins a ducted fan motor to a model aircraft it was not intended to power. This was 3D printed in ABS.
McDermott pipe welding shells - Helped develop and detail fabricated aluminium clamshells which clamp onto two concrete and steel pipes as they are welded together. Precision CNC machining of the parts ensured they fit together neatly; - I also designed and built the production jig that locates the parts for welding.
Conception Sculpture - A 3m sculpture of sperm meeting egg made from plate aluminium. Designed and developed all parts from flat sheet to bend into final shape, designed internal skeleton as well as assembly sequence.
Designer of custom Point Of Sale display systems and retail solutions. Mostly working in sheet metal but also injection mouldings, fabricated plastic, glass and timber. I use Rhino3D for almost everything, and generate renderings of concepts using Vray for Rhino. I don't use any post processes, everything in the render is in the file. I use Grasshopper for parametric control where its required.
