A networking & knowledge-sharing event for creative professionals.

About The Event

The second installment of our series of creative employment networking events was a smash hit. With more than 140 people in attendance the room was full, and people were in a great mood as we headed into the weekend.

The panel discussion ranged from the economy and compensation to cultural fit and motivation. We've got a write up with photos over on Core77, complete with quotes from the panelists.

Thanks to all our panelists, and to everyone else who came. If you didn't have a chance to get to NYC, make sure to join us for our next event!

Wrap Up

The second installment of our series of creative employment networking events was a smash hit. With more than 140 people in attendance the room was full, and people were in a great mood as we headed into the weekend.

Thanks once again to our fabulous panelists, it was a great conversation: Michael Lebowitz - CEO, Big Spaceship, Tom Nicholson - CEO, IconNicholson, Khoi Vinh - Design Director, NY Times.com, Judy Wert - Executive Recruiter, Wert & Co.

Key Observations

- A sagging economy can paradoxically make it harder to find good hires: "Resumes are as bad now as they were in good economies; same ratio of worthless resumes to good resumes." Khoi Vinh of NYTimes.com

- Culture fit and workability are crucial: "Don't hire assholes, no matter how talented." Michael Lebowitz, CEO of Big Spaceship

- Monetary compensation is a factor in attracting top talent, but it's certainly not the most important: "There's probably not a designer in the universe who went into it for the money." Tom Nicholson, co-founder of IconNicholson

- Finding out what motivates designers can tell you a lot about what kind of employee they'll make, and that's largely a matter of asking insightful questions: "'What was the first thing that you ever designed?' is a question I use a lot." Judy Wert, Executive Recruiter, Wert & Co.
