FUTR WRLD entry_Post Ice Cap Tropical Utopia - This image depicts a post polar ice cap world in which humans have made a tropical utopia out of their new environment. In this new day, the land is completely covered by the warm Pacific Ocean, with only the highest mountain peaks revealing themselves. People live in mobile lily pad homes. Generators dangle off the bottoms of the "Lily Pods" creating energy from the high temperatures and strong currents.

Sketch Demo Sketches - Sketches from a sketch demo done at the Art Institute of Portland. This was the second demo I've done in the last 6 months for the ID program there. They are extremely fun and energizing.

There is no prep, I go in with some pencils and markers, I ask the kids what they want to see designed, and draw it up. The pressure to make it not totally suck in front of 30 critical design students is awesome.

I'm running it on a mac with a Wacom Cintiq monitor..... I love this little doodle. Huge hubless drive wheel with an electric motor, and a bunch of oversized ball bearings under the belly. I'm not sure how it would turn, or why you would need it, but I like it.

Word up, I do a similar application in my drawing class. A lot of the Sharpie sketches in my portfolio are a result of this. The pressure you mention is much like heat-treatment on a cast part. It strengthens your skill. Nice! Actually do it the same way in my SW class. I build off the cuff to talk about a specific feature.

Thanks Don, I was thinking about the windy Oregon Coast (and the classic Saarinen TWA terminal in New York). I was thinking the shell could be cast in place concrete, with minimal steel framework. The bulk of the shell could face North to insulate, while the glass faces West to the ocean and South (could be mirrored for those on the other coast).

This sketch evokes the glamour cars of the 30's (Auburns, Cords, Duesenbergs etc) along with their typical proportions - long snout, short cabin and a pert ass! I love the recent muscle-car renaissance but maybe the American auto industry should look back to the halcyon days of proper coach-built tourers for inspiration! Lovely sketch Michael.

Another cool DiTullo rendering! This technique is really economical but so very effective. Great detailing too, I love the way the front wheel arch interacts with the 'A' post, and the side glazing shape is just gorgeous. Thanks Guys, I googled McCall. This is exactly the kind of 50's optimism I was shooting for. The intro to the submission read: Over the past 50 years of concept art, glimpses of the future have shifted from utopian wonderlands to post apocalyptic takes on the future of our race. The idea behind this entry was to show how humans might adapt if disaster did happen. I believe we would adjust and our culture would continue to move forward. I'm glad you both really picked up on it!

He's an Industrial Design trained illustrator based in NY. He produces artwork in a very similar style (though not as slick) allied to a wicked sense of humour. The two books I have by him ( Zany Afternoons & The Last Dream-o-rama ) are excellent. The way your artwork (very cool by the way) reflects the Future Dream-scapes of early Sci-Fi reminded me of his work.

This sketch evokes the glamour cars of the 30's (Auburns, Cords, Duesenbergs etc) along with their typical proportions - long snout, short cabin and a pert ass! I love the recent muscle-car renaissance but maybe the American auto industry should look back to the halcyon days of proper coach-built tourers for inspiration! Lovely sketch Michael.

Thanks Don, I was thinking about the windy Oregon Coast (and the classic Saarinen TWA terminal in New York). I was thinking the shell could be cast in place concrete, with minimal steel framework. The bulk of the shell could face North to insulate, while the glass faces West to the ocean and South (could be mirrored for those on the other coast).

Word up, I do a similar application in my drawing class. A lot of the Sharpie sketches in my portfolio are a result of this. The pressure you mention is much like heat-treatment on a cast part. It strengthens your skill. Nice! Actually do it the same way in my SW class. I build off the cuff to talk about a specific feature.

I'm running it on a mac with a Wacom Cintiq monitor..... I love this little doodle. Huge hubless drive wheel with an electric motor, and a bunch of oversized ball bearings under the belly. I'm not sure how it would turn, or why you would need it, but I like it.
