Garden Perspective - The entry to each condominium includes a covered space with a surface on which to place packages or rest, lighting to navigate unlocking the door, a one-lever door latch, as well as the Ai phone security system.
Site Plan - The three buildings with two condominiums each face a beautifully landscaped courtyard with smooth paths, picnic tables, and shade trees.
Dining Room Perspective - For aging in place, tables and chairs need to incorporate straight legs at the four corners rather than a pedestal or curving legs to avoid tripping hazards and provide stability.
Kitchen Elevation North - The Kohler Vinnata faucet, set on the side of the sink, provides ease in reach and use with a one-lever control for those who have difficulty with their grasp. Tambour doors below the sink open to reveal clear space to accommodate wheel chair access to sink.
Kitchen Elevation South - The Gaggenau side-opening oven along with tile-covered pullout beneath provide ease in using the eye-level oven. The various heights of working surface (counter, bar, and dining table beyond) provide the optimum height for each kitchen activity.
Front Entry Elevation - Note the open space plan for navigating with a wheelchair or walker. Also, the covered entry with a motion sensor porch light, security system, and a place to put down packages while opening the front door.
Floor Plan - The open floor plan allows ease in access to all areas of the home.
Master Bath Elevation - Counter tops at the appropriate level for height or wheelchair use with open space under sink. Flooring for the bathroom is a slightly textured, non-slip tile. One-lever faucet can be used by even those with trouble grasping.
Closet Elevation - The open closet is designed with varying heights of rods and shelving for optimal use.
Living Room Perspective - Glare from the sunlight is filtered with sheer blinds that can be rotated to give total privacy. Wall-mounted television, blinds, and gas fireplace are controlled with remote controls.
Master Bedroom Perspective - Options for bedroom and bathroom furnishings based upon clear space and visual contrast.

Aging in Place Condominiums

The concept for the re-design of Parkside Apartments as universally-designed spaces for those 55 and older is based on the idea that useful can be beautiful. Many things in our world are beautiful as well as functional. I have chosen the lavender plant to symbolize this concept. Lavender is beautiful to the eyes, a pleasing aroma, and multifaceted in its healing attributes. This theme will be seen in the design through the use of various products of universal design.
