Diptych | Their Eyes Were Watching God

Zora Neale Hurston's classic American novel Their Eyes Were Watching God opens and closes with powerful words, and is filled with stunning imagery and evocative language. I interpreted the tone and imagery Hurston used into a typographic diptych. The broadsides can function alone, but also speak to each other as a unit. The sense of containment in the first poster contrasts with the openness and growth evoked in the second, echoing the journey of Hurston's character Janie.
