How to Read a Photograph

An educational program designed for in-person or online delivery via Zoom and participants interact with a self-directed activity.

Every photograph tells a story... but what is that story? Out of context, historical photos too often capture unfamiliar activities of unidentified people or places and can be generally under-interpreted. In this hands-on workshop, learn basic approaches to analyzing photographs as a primary source for use in your own genealogical or historical research. Learning to recognize the general subject matter of a photo is just the first step! Working from photographs in our local-history collection, you will look closely at the images and learn basic methods to identify elements such as date and setting so that you can better interpret the stories you discover.
