CoLab Cards - The CoLab cards are a result of a research program that aimed to bridge the gap between industrial designers and engineering designers by providing more concise information on the role and significance of design representations. The CoLab cards have now been commercialised by Loughborough University and sponsored by the Industrial Designers Society of America and rebranded as IDCards. At the same time, the CoLab system has been translated into a web format as shown in the next slide.
CoLab Web - This slide shows the CoLab system being implemented as an online tool. It is available at http://www.eujinpei.com/colab/mainpage.htm The CoLab system and cards are a result of a research program that aimed to bridge the gap between industrial designers and engineering designers by providing more concise information on the role and significance of design representations.
ID Cards - Research findings indicated a need to facilitate greater understanding between industrial designers and engineering designers. The IDCards provide the name, example and description of 32 design representations used during New Product Development. They indicate when the representations are most employed and if they communicate design information or technical information. The cards are grouped into sketches, drawings, models and prototypes. 13,000 copies were produced and are being distributed.

Digital Industrial Design Process - The purpose of this research was to investigate if a fully digital process of industrial design practice would be viable. Starting from a methodological framework, a case study as used as a basis for the experiment. The use of digital tablets, internet data transmission, haptic modelling, graphic design and rapid prototyping were used. Data collection was captured by means of recording decisions and thoughts on a design diary.

Rapman - The aim of this research was to examine and assess the limitations of using Entry Level RP (ELRP) machines when fabricating objects with high complexity. Experiments include models with complex features with variations in curvature, inter-connected parts, intricate details, protrusions, holes and deeply recessed undercuts were built on a 3D Printer. The issues observed include the problem of warping, the need to manually remove support structures, poor dimensional accuracy and surface roughness.

Barriers to Inclusive Design - An on-line survey was conducted with designers having different levels of experience, providing evidence to issues that affect designers’ uptake of inclusive design, as well as gathering knowledge on existing tool use and designers’ perceptions of the tools’ strengths and weaknesses. It is argued that this approach should lead to tools that are more attuned to designers’ needs at different stages of their development and, as a result, increase the practical uptake of inclusive design.
ErgoCES - Previous research highlighted the need to facilitate the wider uptake of inclusive design among designers. This research investigated the use of Cambridge Engineering Selector (CES) to present and visualise ergonomics data. It contains information on regional anthropometric data, human data and case studies. A pilot trial led to improvements and the revised tool was very well received. This research was undertaken as a research fellowship at Brunel University in the UK.

WSA - This research fellowship investigated the retail experience of shoppers, exploring their challenges, difficulties and expectations. To obtain a more in-depth insight, direct observations were used and the findings were confirmed through semi-structured interviews. Upon completion, the results were presented to retailers, designers and participants as a focus group session.
ByProducts - Looking for a simple seating alternative that’s eco-friendly and space saving? ByProducts’ eco-conscious, clever, and compact tables and stools, which are made from discarded wood cutoffs. Constructed from baltic birch, each chair and table capitalizes on the shapes of the offcuts that they were sourced from. The simplified process also removes the need for additional machining, and the joining system allows for each piece to be quickly assembled, disassembled and flat packed away.

Future Home 2015 - The Future Home 2015 project was a concept that aimed to project future lifestyles and user scenarios. Future Home here in the form of food preparation and storage has been envisaged to take up minimal space, yet being highly interactive, intelligent and space saving. Products are also no longer black or white boxes but are open and provide an emotional function towards users.

ClampLight - Inspired by the humble workshop clamp, the ClampLight is a functional, purposeful lamp that has been designed to perform in terms of aesthetics and function. The design is focused on the handle that suggests a functional role. More importantly, ergonomics is a central feature of the product whereby the handles are made large enough for use; and the clamp mechanism by turning the screw is universally understood. This means that the product is truly easy to access, use and understand. The ClampLight offers flexibility as a bed-side lamp, as a book shelf, or in the car garage. The use of a single energy-saving compact fluorescent lamp conserves power and emits little heat. Product sustainability is achieved through use of a single material (ABS plastic) that allows the whole product to be fully recyclable. In addition, the lamp consists of only two parts – the main shell and a screw. The main shell incorporates an integral hinge with a snap-fit that removes the need for screws and ultimately reduces its impact on the environment.

FutureSafe Civilian Readiness Kit - The FutureSafe Civilian Readiness Kit is a protection gear for civilians to play a more active role to protect themselves rather than to rely on the emergency services. This was a major project during the BA (hons) degree course and it secured a distinction grade. The design was featured in the Icon Magazine, June 2003; exhibited at the UNDU Exhibition in London, 2003; and won a finalist prize for the Core77 Security Competition, 2003.

iLight - The iLight was designed as a vehicle interior light that could be fastened on a seat belt. This would allow passengers to do reading, as a comfort light and as a backup emergency lamp. The iLight was designed from scratch, including design, electronic circuitry and assembly. A working prototype was produced by means of a 3D print model.
