Resumé

The following are descriptions of recent projects.

Merritt Tower
Alta Bates Medical Center
Size: 238,000 SF
Completion: 2013

The Patient Care Pavilion at Alta Bates is 13 floors including med-surgery, diagnostic department, inpatient care, medical offices and in future phases an emergency department. We have taken an Evidence Based Design approach creating a safe, efficient and comfortable healing environment for patients, family, staff and guests. Juxtaposed against the sleek modern architecture, we have incorporated art from Oakland’s inner city as well as rich folk influences from around the world.

Schuster Heart Hospital
Kettering Medical Center Network
Size: 147,600 SF
Completion: 2010

Inspired by the elements in Japanese Garden; earth, wood, fire, water and metal we have created a warm and textural environment filled with meditative spaces where patients and staff can retreat. In addition to the acute care areas, patient and recovery rooms, and administrative offices, this five-story cardiac hospital includes several healing gardens, multi-sensory spiritual features, public and semi-private waiting areas, art alcoves and unique architectural features. It was our goal to aid in healing the mind and the spirit as well as the body.

LifeConnections Health Center
Cisco Systems
Size: 25,000 SF
Completion: 2008

The LifeConnections Health Center is the new model for corporate health care. Offering primary care, exams, lab work and an onsite pharmacy managed by Walgreens, the health center is located on the Cisco grounds in San Jose, California and is available to employees and their families. The clinic is unlike any other building on campus. The design aesthetic is warm yet contemporary with wood slat ceilings, a Zen garden sculpture, mosaic tiles, and prism skylights displaying moving rainbows, a universal symbol for hope. Our eco-conscious client set the bar high challenging the many designers, engineers and technical specialists to create a USGBC LEED Gold Certified building.

Eisenhower Medical Center - Argyros Health Center
La Quinta, California
Size: 96,000 SF
Completion: 2010

An outpatient center with urgent care, laboratory, radiation-oncology suite and imaging center. Seated outside of Palm Springs, the design is inspired by undulating sands, warm sun, and desert flowers creating a patient experience more in keeping with a high-end resort than traditional hospital architecture.

The National World War II Museum Expansion
The National World War II Museum
Size: Multi Phased
Completion: 2010

The National World War II Museum expansion is a massive multi-phased, campus-style experience covering all theaters and service branches of WWII. I am currently involved as exhibit designer of the Campaign Galleries where I am developing the design for the Asia/Pacific and European/Mediterranean Theaters. This space include over 17,000 SF of recreated environments, multi-media interactives, A/V presentations and didactic exhibitry and artifact display. I have also been fortunate to assist in the design of their main restaurant inspired by the USO performances of WWII.

McCormick Tribune Freedom Museum
McCormick Museum Foundation
Size: 10,000 SF
Completion: 2006

The McCormick Tribune Freedom Museum utilizes rich multimedia environments to engage the public in the subject of the First Amendment. I came on board in the later phases of the project and worked closely with the client, fabricators and A/V consultants to tie together design components, materials and construction details. The final result is a thought provoking experience where visitors are encouraged to think critically, ask questions and make their own determinations in a non-traditional museum environment.

The Carolina Basketball Museum
University of North Carolina
Size: 7,500 SF
Completion: 2007

The North Carolina Tar Heel's Basketball Museum is an exhibit that blends contemporary motifs with deep rooted tradition. It includes a fully immersive theater experience, state-of-the-art audio/video presentations, a variety of unique display techniques, computer interactives and culminates with a presentation of the University's five men's basketball NCAA national championship trophies. The museum will be located directly adjacent to the Smith Center arena and will be utilized by students, players, fans and recruits.

Rhythm of the Tropics
Miami Metro Zoo
Size: 27 acres
Completion: 2007

On foot, visitors are able to travel throughout Central and South America exploring the dense and unique habitats of Terra Firme and the flooded forests in Amazonia, the cloud forests of Meso America and the Atlantic forest in Mata Atlantica. They will experience many endemic species and interact with fun and educational exhibits focusing on the environments, the animals and field research. The experience is developed to create a bond with the Tropics that excites visitors into learning more and getting involved with the conservation efforts. Our exhibits are created for both indoor learning using high-tech systems and outdoor exploratory exhibits for one-on-one learning and group demonstrations.

Maritime Museum & Visitor Center
Mobile Landing
Size: 36,000 SF
Completion: TBD

We integrated Mobile’s new visitor center complex with a state-of-the-art maritime museum. We developed a variety of high-tech and low-tech exhibits geared toward both tourists and locals outlining Mobile’s maritime history as a seaport and the industry today. The museum itself is based on a container ship design which houses five stories of interactive exhibits portraying Mobile Bay transportation, ship designing and building, the bay ecosystem, the shipping industry, Mobile’s colonization through the present and visions to the future. The museum houses several theaters and orientation centers as well as changing exhibits for frequent guests. The exhibits are fully immersive and visitor activated.

Secrets of the Amazon
South Carolina Aquarium
Size: 2,600 SF
Completed: 2004

We designed a replacement to the Coastal Rhythms display; a temporary exhibit also designed by Lyons/Zaremba Inc. This themed environment recreates an Amazonian research hut where visitors can learn all about current field work while viewing actual rain forest animals including; macaws, toucans, electric eels, piranhas, frogs, venomous snakes, candiru, four-eyed fish and the infamous anaconda. The central element includes a kids' corral where children can explore crates filled with stimulating and educational Amazonian artifacts.

Humboldt Penguins
Rosamond P. Gifford Zoo at Burnet Park
Size: 7,500 SF
Completion: Fall 2004

We developed a completely immersive experience where visitors meander through a rugged pathway seemingly along the Chilean coast. Rock walls and alcoves allow visitors to explore underwater caverns and coastal shores while all along watching and learning about Humboldt penguins as they interact in a naturalistic environment. The experience leads up to a shady enclosure where visitors can watch the penguins during both zoo visiting hours and in the evenings when the area is transformed for social events. Close-by sits the husbandry building where nesting penguins are held and can be viewed throughout the year.

Bermuda Natural History Museum
Bermuda Aquarium, Museum & Zoo
Size: 3,000 SF
Completed: 2003

We worked closely with the BAMZ staff to completely redesign the History Museum while incorporating their vast collection of artifacts. We developed exhibitry that illustrated both the natural history from Bermuda’s volcanic birth to it’s changing shorelines today and the changes brought on by people, starting from it’s colonization to the modern tourist industry. We integrating mechanical interactives with artifact displays, dioramas, a video theater and present day field research.
