Ceramic Art

The ceramic work is created with locally sourced clay and and all unused clay is recycled. Each piece formed with a unique process developed through years of trial and experimentation. First, the segments are shaped , either wheel thrown or slab built. and they are then cut and combined into complex curved elements and compositions. Elaborated handles and feet are hand built and attached with scoring and thick slip. After final shaping and smoothing, the pieces are first bisque fired then glazed in a distinctive manner: either with multiple layers of different colors or a “chino” type glaze which creates a multi-hued finish depending on the layers of application. Both of these techniques are usually combined in one piece and used for contrasting compositional purposes. The work is then fired in a gas fired kiln to 2,800 degrees with a heavy body reduction phase followed by a continuous glaze reduction that serves to bring out the color intensity within the cone 10 glazes.
