Public Library - The bookshelves become the Library.

Influencing the design of the public library by the dominance of the bookshelves. - Usually in libraries, the bookshelves are not the most important or dominant interior feature. I wanted to question this popular standard with making the bookshelves and integral part of the architecture.

A Destination for Conservation: oil rigs have a obligate symbiotic relationship with marine life. - This stunning image was taken below one of the oil rigs in the Beta Field, near Long Beach California. These oil rigs have 30 years of biomass encasing the submerged metal structural beams and columns. They have become an accidental artificial reef. The oil rigs provide growing support for coral and sponges and has become an ecosystem and home for thousands of important fish, marine mammals, and invertebrates.
Full Size (highres_width x highres_height)
There are 27 oil rigs off the coast of California that are to be decommissioned by 2030. Decommissioning involves the complete removal of the oil rig from the site.
Repurposing the rigs into Environmental Observatories would ensure the protection of the marine life, and would they would become a learning and research destination. Three Laboratories on the rigs would provide a space to conduct research, collaboration, and the exchange of knowledge.
