2004-Volkswagen of North America New Beetle: Designers were called in to aid VW in re-invigorating New Beetle sales. Restrictions were made to keep costs down. Sheet metal changes were not allowed. Much time was spent analyzing interior ergonomics and packaging issues. Styling was kept to a concept for a restyled front and rear bumper. My proposal involved a factory optional appearance package that featured interchangeable inserts that were color coded to optional wheel packages. To address the consumers concerns that the car was too small to carry large items, I developed a hybrid concept. To take advantage of the vehicles natural shape moving panels were used in conjunction with a power canvas top and flat folding floor. The end result transformed the Beetle into a very capable utilitarian vehicle. The concept car was well received and was featured in countless magazines and web articles.
2003-Arvin Meritor Roofing Systems: This was an intensive project working hands on with A.R.M engineering team. Feasibility concerns such as wind buffeting, internal mechanisms, and water channeling were the primary factors. The project involved assembly, shipping, molding practices, and user interface. For this task I was designated the Project Manager. I was the liason between design team members and the engineers. For presentations to upper management I was the group spokes person. Much time was spent designing interior headliner and associated items as well as functionality and manufacturing simplicity of the system. The team concept was the invention of a self-contained/powered, modular roof system dubbed the plug-in system. It allowed the consumer to choose from a variety of roof accessories at time of purchase as well as the ability to add items in the future.
