Love and Strife

Empedocles (ca. 490–430 BC) believed all of the forces in the universe were reducible to two: Love and Strife. Love is described as the force of order and simplicity, bringing objects and people together. Strife is the force of discord and chaos, driving people and objects apart. The project began as an excercize in utility, emphasizing love. Outside influences added novelty to the project, emphasizing strife. The final product depicts this contrast as a simple utilitarian form that evolves over space and time to become something barely, if at all, functional. Love and Strife was shown in the Fall 2011 Northern Michigan University Senior Art Exhibition.
