Macrophotography/Microscopy

The following work is a representative sample of a body of over 600 images completed for the UC Riverside Department of Entomology. My work is published in 15 scientific journals, and featured in Thrips of California, an online insect identification and taxonomy guide.

To produce each image, I took anywhere between 15 to 60 exposures of slide-mounted insect specimens with a c-mount digital microscope camera. I adjusted focus incrementally for each exposure. I processed the images using Syncroscopy Auto-Montage software, which uses algorithms to stitch the series of photographs into a single, focused image. The automatically montaged images required a significant amount of hand editing, a process in which I corrected glitches in the montaged image by manually redefining the source photo for that area. The images required extensive cleanup of dust and other artifacts, and color correction to account for the color casts that can occur at extremely high magnification.
