Prototype Manager—Mid Level Staff

: Humanscale Design Studio NYC (HSDS)

Reports to
Director, Industrial Design

Supervisory over
Workshop staff

Overall responsibility
New Product Development

Key areas of responsibility

Lead In-House prototyping discipline
- Plan growth of prototyping facilities to support Humanscale's Design Studio
- Mentor design and engineering staff in prototyping strategies and techniques
- Work closely with industrial design and engineering leads to create an aligned prototyping team

Improve & Grow
- Research and acquire equipment that will aid in future development work
- Grow capabilities of both prototyping staff and design studio
- Develop work flow with other disciplines, identify how prototyping can add value to design process and implement
- Build relationships with outside vendors, external design partners and suppliers
- Educate designers and engineers in the latest RP developments and their application

Maintain prototyping lab
- Maintain safe working environment
- Maintain equipment
- Maintain stock and supplies

Model making
- Construct prototypes
- Test Rigs
- Proof of concept models
- Program vertical CNC mill
- Manual machining
- High quality detailing and finishing techniques

Consults with
• HSDS Staff
• Industrial Design Manager
• Engineering Manager
• Prototyping vendors

Qualifications
- Minimum of 6 years of relevant experience in model making/prototyping
- Knowledge of Product Development Processes
- A good working knowledge of SolidWorks or other CAD/CAM system
- A sound understanding of mechanism design
- An inquisitive nature
- Strong problem solving skills
- Keen attention to detail
