New Product Development Manager
The Product Development Manager facilitates the development of innovative, industry leading products for Targus. This requires working directly with the Director of Product Development, the Global Sourcing Group (GSG) and International Product team (Product Management and Design) in the U.S and individual global regions. The Product Development Manager’s main role is to be the bridge between Targus Product group, GSG and our suppliers to translate new design ideas, product material needs, and manufacturing processes into cost-optimized, manufacturable solutions to bring to mass production. He/She will be accountable for enhancing the development of new products to support Targus’ NPD strategy.
Principle Roles and Responsibilities:
•Rich experience with hands-on product development and practical experience with numerous ground up design efforts leading to successful product launch.
•Working knowledge of marketing and design language coupled with collaborative temperament, which translates into the ability to ensure smooth communication with internal and external marketing and design resources.
•Work cooperatively with cross-functional teams to manage supplier relationships; ensure on-time program delivery and fulfill Product Requirement Document (PRD).
•Translate product concepts and spec packs into product prototypes and subsequently organize sample reviews with key stakeholders to gain buy in.
•Procure different design options to realize product marketing’s wishes, be able to articulate relative PROs and CONs of respective options, provide professional engineering consultation to Product Manager in order to facilitate appropriate option selection.
•Involvement in pre-production to assure challenges encountered in the development process are identified as ‘watch-outs’ for initial production quality assurance efforts.
•Strong sense of DFM, CMF and command of all aspects of manufacturing processes necessary to assure highest possible level of fidelity to design intent, while managing cost optimization.
•Be a major contributor to the Targus R&D Roadmap by collaborating with the GSG and suppliers on new innovation initiatives.
•Be sensitive to market requirements while being an active idea promoter to inspire team to provide new solution options.
•Minimum 10 years of experience in product development with international or local organization.
•Solid experience in relevant product development. Sourcing experience will be a plus.
•Expertise in a range of product, material, and manufacturing process areas (used for soft goods and electronic consumer products) is necessary.
•Capable of translating the knowledge/technology to consumer products in response of declared usage models.
•Have capability of utilizing market intelligence and understanding the constraints or variations required by differing global regions, and the ability to provide appropriate solutions; fast reaction on customer demands.
•Strong communication between HQ (Designer and product team), regions and suppliers.
•Collaborative leadership style with strong influencing and negotiating skill to get things done.
•Self starter and a mature, independent contributor with ability to drive excellence.
•Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required. Knowledge of Mandarin is a plus.
•Systematic approach with strong analytical skill.
•Ability to interpret a Bill of Materials (BOM).
•Experience with spec pack creation desired.
•Excellent problem solving and resolution skills.
•Ability to excel in a cross-functional team environment.
•Proficient computer skills, MS Office programs and Adobe Suite.
•Strong presentation skills desired.
•Must be able to plan and prioritize work to achieve goals.
•Position will require approximately 40% travel, including international travel.
•A Bachelor’s degree and ten years experience as a Product Developer in the consumer products industry or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
