As a Studio Engineer you will be part of the engineering team at Newell Rubbermaid's new 40,000-square-foot design headquarters in Kalamazoo, Michigan, in the Business, Technology and Research Park of Western Michigan. This new facility has been carefully planned to foster creativity and maximize the sharing of ideas and technologies among the company's brands and process partners. A large, open studio space will provide the ideal environment for designers and engineers to collaborate using advanced software tools. Immersion labs for the company's priority business segments will enable design and engineering teams to evaluate product prototypes and imagine the possibilities of future product roadmaps. You will collaborate closely with Industrial Designers to create concepts that will be the source of innovation throughout Newell Rubbermaid. A strong technical background is required to ensure the ideas being developed can be manufactured cost effectively and achieve performance targets. Additionally, you will partner with the Advanced Technology and Material teams to champion innovative technical solutions are incorporated into the product design.
•Collaborate closely with the Industrial Design team to ensure concepts are both functional and can be manufactured
◦Create and update 2D/3D CAD models and drawings
◦Utilize PLM (product Lifecycle Management) system to catalog and maintain all project data so it is accessible to the team
◦Utilize CAE tools such as Finite Element Analysis and Mold Flow Analysis to assure successful designs
◦Lead Engineering concept brainstorming
•Solve the toughest and most complex of problems; be a quick study of the new and different; add personal wisdom and experience to come to the best solution, given the situation; use multiple problem-solving tools and techniques.
•Support projects and meet deadlines. Maneuvers well to get things done; knows where to go to get what he/she needs; knows what the right thing to do is; presents views and arguments well.
•Passion for new product development, design, technology, and innovation
•Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent
Work Experience Requirements:
•2-5 years relevant work experience
•Proven track record working up front in the early stages of development with Industrial Design
•Excellent communication and presentation skills.
•Experience with development of consumer products is preferred
•Excellent oral and written communication skills
•Work experience in a team environment
•Self-motivated and flexible. Willing to learn new things
•Proven ability to handle multiple assignments simultaneously
Technical Experience Requirements:
•Strong skills in using one of the major CAD packages; PTC Creo (Pro/Engineer), SolidWorks, or Catia is required
•Knowledgeable in principles of design for injection molding, blow molding, rotational molding, extrusion, metal fabrication, and assembly is preferred
•Familiarity with design for manufacturability (DFM) preferred
•Familiarity with design for assembly (DFA) preferred
•Knowledgeable in plastic material performance and selection preferred
•Must be proficient in MS Office
