Lead Designer and Designer
The Foundation Design without Borders is in the process of scaling up design capacity in our Oslo office and is looking for 1-2 full time designers to help us develop design as a professional service within development aid and business contexts in developing countries.

As a Design without Borders designer you will be part of a dynamic team of designers and project managers breaking new ground with international NGOs and Norwegian and international businesses that have little or no prior experience with design in product and service development. As a part of the Design without Borders team you will be an ambassador for design and you will be expected to present your work and share your knowledge, skills and insights with different industries, educational institutions and the professional design communities.

We are looking for two designers with different level of seniority and expertise; one as a lead designer and the other as designer. Below you will find a description of each. Please specify in your application which position you are applying for.

Roles and Responsibilities

Lead Designer
• Overall responsibility of ensuring that DwB delivers exemplary work whilst meeting both the client’s and foundation’s objectives.
• Overall responsibility for developing design expertise in identified key areas across Norwegian and Ugandan organisations
• Ensuring that the Designers are aware of trends & developments in design techniques & tools that are relevant for the businesses
• Demonstrate a very high standard of design and creativity within their work.
• Actively seek to further knowledge and personal development of designers
• Overall responsibility for carrying out activities for securing mutual knowledge transfer between Norway and Uganda
• Communication collaboration with the managing director about design philosophy and project results in all relevant arenas (seminars, meetings, conferences)
• Identification of strategic opportunities for use of design within the identified mandate of the foundation
• Selling and establishing new design pre-projects/projects for our target groups
• Produce and contribute in the design projects
• The lead designer will work with the managing director and other designers to recommend strategies and consistency of solutions for clients
• Being the point of contact for clients in situations where a high level perspective is required on the strategic direction or in situations of escalated project issues
• Some travel is to be expected as a part of the job

• Participation and production in the development projects for our clients (international NGOs, international and local businesses)
• Carry out needs assessments and mapping out issues that need to be addressed
• Design management of selected projects
• Design the production process
• Conduct research
• Produce concepts
• Design, build and test tangible prototypes
• Visualize the design process
• Report progress and communicate project results in the relevant arenas
• Contribute to expertise and strategic development of Design without Borders
• Function as client advisor in the relevant design areas

Desired Skills and Experience

Lead Designer
• Minimum Bachelor degree, preferably higher degree within industrial/product/service design/engineering design
• Minimum five years’ relevant experience
• Excellent written and spoken English - working language will be English
• Excellent visual communication/presentation skills especially in composing and presenting a clear message, ability to inspire, convince and engage the audience
• Excellent workshop facilitation skills
• International/cross-cultural experience is an asset
• A strategic thinker with implementation experience and the ability to dive into details when necessary
• Ability to inspire and lead designers

• Minimum Bachelor degree or higher in service/industrial/system-oriented design
• Minimum 2 years relevant experience
• Good visual communication/presentation skills
• Proficiency in relevant design and engineering software
• Excellent written and spoken English - working language will be English
• International/cross-cultural experience is an asset
