The School of Architecture and Design at the University of Kansas is looking for an outstanding colleague to join us as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Design. Successful applicants will have a terminal degree (MFA, MDes…) with research and/or client based projects in the area of Interaction Design. The Department seeks an active and open-minded design thinker and maker who will embrace working with both Visual Communication Design and Industrial Design programs. A candidate with an active research program, teaching experience, curriculum development and professional experience will distinguish applicants.

The preferred candidate has experience in at least three of the following areas:
Interaction Design
UI /UX Design for Web and Mobile
Graphic Design/Visual Communication Design
User Experience Design
Human Centered Design
Design Entrepreneurship
Environmental Design
Virtual/Augmented Reality
Wearable Technology
Prior teaching at the college or university level
Knowledge of the IoT (Internet of Things) and the role technology plays in today’s product and service design

Candidates should have the ability to work in an interdisciplinary, diverse and collaborative environment. Research in issues related to interaction design with external research grants will be noted. Opened in 1866, the University of Kansas is a comprehensive educational and research institution with 29,272 students and more than 2,100 faculty members. KU’s main Lawrence campus is approximately 40 miles west of Kansas City, Missouri home to vital cultural and business communities with an array of nationally recognized visual and preforming arts venues. The Department of Design offers undergraduate areas of study in Industrial Design, Illustration and Animation, Photography and Visual Communication. Additionally, KU offers two MA degrees in Interaction Design and Design Management. The School of Architecture and Design has extensive studio and lab facilities, including a 65,000 maker space.

Required Qualifications
— MFA or MDes in interaction design and/or visual communication design or a terminal degree in an appropriate related field.
— Current professional practice in the fields of interaction design and/or visual communication design and/or a record of scholarly creative work.
