Clinical Assistant Professor of Industrial Design
The Design School in the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts at Arizona State University invites applications for a full-time non-tenure-track appointment in interaction design at the clinical assistant professor level beginning fall 2018 for a one-year, renewable appointment.

The Design School is the largest and most comprehensive design school in the country. It plays prominent roles in design research, pedagogy and public engagement within the Herberger Institute, the University and the greater Phoenix community. Over the next year the Design School is embarking on an exciting ‘redesign’ process – building the next great American design school at the New American University, a school that is relevant, equitable and collaborative. The strategic planning process will engage the local community, country and world in defining what a design school in the future will look like. This position will join the School on that journey to help lead the field of design education into the future. Currently, the school has approximately 55 full-time faculty and 1,500 students enrolled in programs in architecture, industrial design, interior design, landscape architecture, urban design and visual communication design. The Design School faculty work on a variety of issues – from addressing the future of the Rio Salado in Metropolitan Phoenix to partnering with Google on increasing human satisfaction to working with communities across the globe to address critical issues of sustainability. In addition, the school’s curricula and research are grounded in its commitment to prepare the next generation of designers to engage in collaborative multi-disciplinary inquiry so that they may work productively within and beyond the boundaries of their respective disciplines.
The industrial design program maintains a tradition of academic excellence and has become a leader in transdisciplinary teaching, processes of innovation and design research. Faculty in the program have expertise in all areas of industrial design including human factors and ergonomics, design education, digital visualization, rapid prototyping, innovation studies, tangible interactions, basic engineering, branding, eco-design, biomimicry, sustainability, design history and material culture studies.
Interaction design is defined as a discipline concerned with the human-centered design of experiences with products, services, interactive media and information spaces.This cross-disciplinary position brings together concepts from design (industrial design, visual communication design, architecture) HCI and the social sciences (psychology, cognitive sciences, infor¬matics and communication).
The industrial design program at ASU focuses on a new model of transdisciplinary product development called Integrated Innovation. The primary goal of Integrated Innovation is to produce design solutions that:
1. meet people’s needs in imaginative ways
2. create value in the marketplace and
3. improve society and the environment.
The successful candidate's teaching and creative work should intersect product and interaction design, and move beyond screen interactions. The ideal candidate will have the capacity for significant contributions to the inter-disciplinary design discourse.The candidate is expected to actively participate in the teaching of the industrial design degree programs Bachelor of Science in Design, Master of Industrial Design and Master of Science in Design.
The appointee will be expected to teach undergraduate and graduate level studio courses as well as lecture/seminar courses in these degree programs. In addition, mentoring thesis projects is included as part of the teaching responsibility. The candidate will also be expected to advise student organizations and participate in service to the Program, School, Institute and University.
The successful candidate is required to:
• Possess a graduate degree in interaction design or related fields; and
• Mave a minimum of two years experience working in the profession, either in a manufacturing organization or a consultancy.
Preference will be given to individuals with some or all of the following qualifications:
• Experience teaching university level design studio and lecture courses;
• Demonstrated knowledge of the methodologies, practices and tools of interaction design;
• Demonstrated a transdisciplinary design philosophy at the intersection of product- and interaction design;
• Demonstrated interest and experience in developing and participate in highly interdisciplinary and innovative teaching programs;
• An interest in online teaching and learning; and
• Commitment to research, teaching, and recruiting a diverse student population.
