Job Description

ASSISTANT PROFESSOR, GRAPHIC DESIGN PROGRAM
California College of the Arts

COLLEGE
Founded in 1907, California College of the Arts (CCA) is an independent non-profit art college with undergraduate programs in architecture, design, fine arts, visual studies, and writing and literature.  The college also has graduate programs in architecture, comics, design, interaction design, curatorial practice, design strategy, fine arts, film, visual and critical studies, and writing.  Through these programs, the college has created a dynamic and interdisciplinary environment to fulfill the school’s motto of “Make art that matters.”  Diverse cultural perspectives enrich the CCA community and the college believes that continuing to expand the horizons of the students and faculty is essential to achieving its educational objectives. CCA represents over one hundred years of dedication to its mission, whose character reflects its location in the San Francisco Bay Area, where histories of radical politics and technological innovation inform a culturally rich academic community infused by art schools, research universities, world-renowned museums, galleries, start-ups and community-run institutions. With campuses in Oakland and San Francisco, CCA currently enrolls 1,950 full-time students and is embarking on a major campus planning project that will unify the college in one location and ensure its academic excellence for the next century.

PROGRAM SUMMARY
CCA’s Graphic Design program offers a leading, studio-based, Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. The program is dedicated to conceptual exploration alongside practice-based problem-solving. The pedagogy is grounded in practical knowledge, critical awareness, social and cultural engagement, and the spirit of experimentation.

Our students are makers and systems thinkers. The form of their work varies widely, but it always strives to be well-crafted, thoughtful, and appropriate. Our students are encouraged to develop an awareness of the context of their work, a sensitivity for where, when, and for whom they are designing. Our faculty expose students to diverse design perspectives and encourage them to develop a culturally competent and personally committed point of view. Our rigorous curriculum trains students in a practice that balances observation and research with thinking and making.

We believe the classroom is where the work begins, not where it ends. Our graduates become leaders in the field—developing their own practices or working in larger, collaborative settings—creating and contributing to contemporary culture and society.

POSITION SUMMARY
CCA invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Graphic Design to begin August  2018.

Graphic Design is a rapidly evolving and broadening field, and we seek to augment our core faculty with visionary educator-practitioners who are deeply connected to contemporary and emerging practices. They are engaged makers who are interested in exploring new models for design education.

Ideally, the successful candidate’s practice and expertise includes one or more of the following specialties:
• Interactive Design & Creative Technologies

The position entails teaching (a full-time load is five courses per year), participating in curricular development, playing a leadership role in building the Graphic Design program, supporting program activities, and serving on college-wide committees. In addition to teaching in the Graphic Design program, there is a potential for candidates to expand their teaching into related undergraduate and graduate programs at CCA such as the MFA in Design, the BFA and MDes programs in Interaction Design, the BFA in Illustration, and the First Year Program. The position also requires a commitment to continued professional work with significant contributions in the field of practice.

In keeping with the college’s commitment to diversity, community engagement, and social justice, we seek candidates who will cultivate an equitable studio environment and a diverse and inclusive learning community.
