Assistant Professor, Specialization in Industrial/Product Design
The Department of Art at William Paterson University’s College of the Arts and Communication invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor, with a specialization in Industrial and Product Design. Start date is September 1, 2018.
The successful candidate will join a dynamic department poised for growth through its Center for New Art, where traditional and emerging modalities in the creative process are utilized across disciplines in our state of the arts studio and maker spaces. Tenure track faculty responsibilities include but are not limited to pedagogy, service, creative expression and professional growth.
The position requires historical knowledge and experience (theory and professional practice in industrial/product design) utilizing industry standard design software with current and emerging technology. A strong desire to advance the curriculum that includes drawing and form finding as well as experience with digital 3d rendering, animation and modeler software (Keyshot, Rhino, etc.) is required with a focus on the “human-centered” design process emphasizing new product solutions that embrace universal design ideals.
Experience in experimental forms such as physical computing, augmented reality, virtual reality or ecological practice that include universal design concepts is also desired. We seek to integrate new and diverse approaches into a strong 3d area which includes an extensive 3d printing lab, large scale robotic, CNC, laser cutting, foundry as well as sculpture and ceramics.
The successful candidate will teach courses in the foundations and 3d design area within the 3d concentration of the undergraduate program while expanding the curriculum with relevant courses in industrial and product design ideation. Additionally, participation in departmental meetings and committees, service on graduate student committees, as well as University and College committees is an essential part of the position while maintaining active professional practice engagement and networks.
Qualified candidates will have an earned MID and or MFA degree that includes industry experience, with an established record of professional achievement. Three (3) years teaching experience at the university level is preferred. We encourage practice across all media and technology using a variety of materials. This is an opportunity to develop and integrate new and diverse areas in the design discipline while strengthening the program’s existing curriculum. The department seeks a collaborative developmental approach in the expansion of curricular programs consistent with the goals of the strategic plan of William Paterson University and the College of the Arts and Communication.
