Principal Industrial Designer (Medical)
Under the supervision of the Executive Director of Design the Principal Industrial Designer - Medical develops creative and applicable design solutions primarily for our healthcare and medical device clients.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Provide a 360-degree view of healthcare & medical projects. Including: user needs advocate (surgeon, patient, nurse, consumer), human factors expertise/methodologies for usability testing (partner with Research & Insights team), regulatory requirements, manufacturing, brand assets/aesthetics, all culminating into a comprehensive, functional and manufacturable solution.
Operates as a functional expert on healthcare & medical design projects. Understands and meets the client needs (not asks) in a clear and professional manner.
Ability to identify the most technically challenging problems and create strategic & tactical plans to address.
Based on user-centered design princples, creates functional and manufacturable design solutions based on document design specifications and criteria.
Executes high quality design solutions with limited or no supervision.
Drives design excellence through well-reasoned creative product solutions and supporting aesthetic solutions. Designs a defendable design with logic and reason.
Operates as a design and user advocate within the project teams and toward our clients.
Serves as a mentor to more junior designers on the team.
Partners with Research & Insights team on varioius research efforts: brainstorming, observations, understanding user inputs, participate in observational research, uncover unmet needs, participate in usability tests and validate designd concepts.
Takes the lead in presenting design concepts and prototypes to internal and client stakeholders for review.
In partnership with Executive Director of Design, creates projects startegies and proposals.
Knowledge and skills at a level normally acquired through the completion of a Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Design or related fields. Advanced degree preferred.
15+ years of industry experience in medical product design, required.
Working knowledge of FDA content necessary for medical device pre-market submission (IEC 60601 standards), including an understanding of how to apply the principles within the ISO 14971 risk management for medical devices, strongly required.
Demonstrated passion towards user driven design creation.
Demonstrated ability to translate a user targeted problem statement into a logical design strategy and concept for a team to take action upon.
Exhibit a solid understanding and experience delivering results based on consumer insights.
Advanced ability to quickly synthesize inputs and drive towards appropriate solutions.
Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate design intent in a variety of methods at a high degree of professionalism.
Strong sketching and conceptualizing abilities.
Deep production design experience: understanding of materials, processes and assembly.
Deep knowledge of surface design to meet manufacturing requirements and class-A surface aesthetic quality; flawless release to client CAD system.
Strong intrapersonal skills.
Expert proficiency of latest digital tools: 2D- Adobe Suite , Sketchbook Pro, Painter, 3D- SolidWorks and Keyshot
