Popixel Lounge - Popixel Lounge uses 36,000 ice cream sticks on a foam substrate to create not only an intriguing surface, but a surprisingly comfortable cushion that conforms to the occupant's body, and slowly returns to its original position after the occupant rises.

Popixel Lounge - My submission for the 9th Annual Cranbrook Chair Show was for the most part a departure from my iterative research leading up to my final project at Cranbrook. After the Parasite Studies (see http://www.coroflot.com/jrich/models), I was left with a desire to construct something using large quantities of ice cream sticks, as that leg of investigation in the previous project ended after the modeling phase.

Popixel Lounge - I was intrigued by the stacking pattern of ice cream sticks inside the shipping carton, and wished to make that pattern a surface. Furthermore, I wished to make that surface comfortable, hence the use of memory foam as a substrate beneath the sticks.

Popixel Lounge - The row of 'troughs' that contain the sticks and foam is made of galvanized steel flashing, while Baltic birch plywood caps help maintain the form of the chair as it drapes over the base, also made of Baltic birch plywood.

Popixel Bench - Using 18,000 ice cream sticks left over from Popixel Lounge, I designed a simpler piece of furniture, one less experimental in its use of materials, and more general in the way users approach it. As such, this iteration in the Popixel series carries greater appeal as a consumer product, and remains one I continue to refine and market.
