EXPERIENCE

ThenoDesign, Denver, Colorado
Design Director, May 2006-present
ThenoDesign specializes in performance athletic apparel. Its clients include Pearl Izumi, Jett Mountain Bike Gear and Fox Racing Inc.

For Pearl Izumi (2013 season)

• Played key role in reintroduction of Pearl Izumi’s mountain bike apparel line, differentiating it from company’s established road-bike offerings and affordably scaling pro-rider specifications to needs of amateur rider.
• Led extensive discovery into target market, interviewing pro and amateur riders, in addition to consulting Pearl Izumi domestic and international design teams and development, product-lifecycle, marketing and sales staff.
• Analyzed findings and created product narratives aimed at specific consumers, including the previously underserved high-endurance cross-country rider; based inspiration boards and design concepts on product stories, which also guided production process – strict adherence to narrative meant branding was built into product.
• Performance-enhancing innovations included passive and active venting, moisture-wicking stretch fabrics engineered to keep the rider cool and dry, and ergonomic paneling promoting maximum support and freedom of movement.
• Graphics package boasted bold styling reflecting company’s Japanese heritage and reinforcing brand identity.

For Jett Mountain Bike Gear (2008-2011 seasons)

• Developed inaugural mountain bike apparel line; oversaw brand direction (including establishment of brand guidelines) and design agenda for more than 25 products. Raptor short was among Bike’s 2009 “Products to Look For.”
• Led research and presented seasonal design trends, market feedback and design inspiration to upper management.
• Worked closely with pro athletes to achieve optimum functionality; collaborated with development staff on cost containment.

For Fox Racing (2006-2010 seasons)

• Challenged status quo of motocross apparel (typified by bulky materials) with lightweight, breathable stretch fabrics that move with the body while providing maximum protection – greater comfort resulted in improved performance.
• Collaborated with design team to integrate such progressive elements as vented thigh logos and targeted stretch areas, as well as innovations in fit.
• Worked with global merchandising team to identify new outerwear segments, then presented highly targeted design concepts.

Fox Racing (Fox Head, Inc.), Newport Beach, California
Performance Apparel Designer MX, May 2004-May 2006

• Designed 180 Gear set (pant, jersey, glove) – #1 in sales from 2004 to 2008.
• Proved instrumental in introduction of over-the-boot pant and other outerwear to motocross market; worked closely with merchandising department on interpreting trends and formulating graphics and colorways.
• Pioneered a waterproof pant with “intelligent” ventilation and moisture-wicking liner, a jacket boasting detachable sleeves and multiple secure storage options, and a pant that can be converted into shorts.
• Streamlined and reorganized tech packs to enhance vendor usability, resulting in greater sample accuracy and thus more efficient development.
• Traveled to factories to review design work and partner with development personnel on production issues and costing.

Slippery Wetsuits/Thor Motocross, San Diego, California
Performance Product Designer, January 2001-April 2004

• Increased 2002/2003 year-over-year sales by 15% with new-technology designs and redirection of performance products to a more casual consumer.
• Teamed with brand manager and sponsored athletes on one of the most successful lines in the history of the brand; contributed to as many as 40 performance athletic products per season.
• Identified areas of growth, leading to introduction of full neoprene vest.
