I have designed hundreds of products for companies such as Limited Brands, Costco, Macys, Walmart, Martha Stewart Home, Crate & Barrel, Restoration Hardware, Target and TSUM. My focus prior to graduate school was house-wares, home and fashion industries. In 2012 I completed a graduate degree at Stanford to learn "design-thinking," which emphasizes empathy, rapid prototyping, and user testing to create meaningful products and services. During my studies, I began development of a medical device that supports human lactation, a health-related mobile app, personal emergency response system concepts and a toy that promotes family communication. I started my consultancy in June 2012 which has a focus on health and wellness products. I have since been working on design projects for the bio-tech, mobile health, personal care and PERS industries. I also have launched "Maternal Life LLC," A company focused on developing products to improve safety in labor & delivery. Maternal Life's first product, Primo-Lacto®, launched in 2016 after a clinical trial, and FDA clearance. Primo-Lacto is currently sold in hospitals.

Redesigning The Hospital Birth Experience-- (fall 2013) We used the hospital L&D experience as a backdrop for learning design thinking methodology. Our approach was to give students the opportunity to gain empathy for the “users” in labor and delivery. We are very grateful to CAPE (Center for Advanced Pediatric & Perinatal Education) at Stanford for running the birth simulations, and for the many clinicians and new parents who volunteered their time.
Redesigning the Neonatal ICU, ME 359-- (fall 2014) Redesigning the Neonatal ICU informed students about current challenges in the NICU environment through expert speakers, literature, CAPE simulations and field trips. Simultaneously, we studied the users: their environment, their behavior, and their emotions.
Designing For Safety In Labor & Delivery ME 359--(winter 2016) This class was inspired by research I am currently participating in regarding how to improve safety in labor and delivery, funded by an AHRQ grant. Dr. Henry Lee, and I informed students about challenges in the L&D environment through direct observation in a simulated environment and the hospital. Simultaneously, we studied the users: their environment, protocols, communication and behavior.
The Empathy Project--Summer, '16 at the d. School, co-taught with Dr. Henry C. Lee, Seamus Harte and Hamsika Chandrasekar. This class is for Stanford medical students to experience first hand the challenges patients with chronic disease face day-to-day through direct observation, and then communicate the insights learned through storytelling techniques.

Maternal Life creates products that improve safety and patient experience for mothers and babies. "Primo-Lacto" is a 2-part closed system for colostrum collection. Primo-Lacto is intended for use when (1) mothers cannot or choose not to nurse their newborn or (2) the newborn can’t nurse due to trouble latching, or prematurity. Primo-Lacto enables the goals of the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI), a global program sponsored by the WHO and UNICEF. Primo-Lacto is a tool to help hospitals meet the criteria outlined in BFHI. Please see www.maternallife.co for more information.
