The first step in any good urban design is to identify the challenges and opportunities through careful analysis, both through digital mapping and research and on-site observations of patterns, trends, and character. Positive/negative space, pedestrian patterns, public transit routes, light/shadow, and population use and density are all of more consequence than they might be in a more rural area. Great urban design can energize a street and create safer urban environments.
