Inspiration - We were inspired by memories of perfect summer days spent playing tag or hide and seek. Being outdoors. Exploring nature. and running forever. At the end of the day, the sun would set, and disappointed you would realise that the day wouldn’t last forever. But then, the most magical thing would happen - fireflies. The unique spatial quality of a forest or a bamboo grove - the sense of endless space but only being able to see a short distance - was also inspirational.
Proposal - Described simply, our proposal is a field of columns scattered at the foot of the hill. At the top of each pole, is a solar powerd, motion-triggered light. As children run through the installation, the poles glow (and possibly emit a subtle sound) and then slowly fade behind them. This gives timeless games like tag or hide and seek a new dimension, and also allows them to be played once the sun goes down. At the top of the hill, observers would be treated to an incredible light show.

Play Park Installation

This was my shortlisted entry for a play installation in a London park. The inspiration was the kind of play that happens on warm summer nights with fireflies, and the kinds of simple spontaneous games kids can play for hours like freeze tag or hide-and-seek. Also inspiring was the particular spatial quality of a grove of bamboo. Inside one's vision is limited and yet is still physically free and open in all directions. This seemed like the perfect setting for such games.

The proposal was a field of flexible poles each with motion sensing light at the top. The field is open-ended enough to stimulate creative play. The lights suggest the slow off and on glow of fireflies and invite play to continue as the sun is setting. The children playing create a mesmerizing light show that can be viewed from the hill above.

I partnered with Tinker.it to prototype the arduino electronics to used in the project.
