VW DCP Aerocoupe

Description

I worked as part of the multi-discipline Alias, Clay, hard-modelling and RTT Visualisation team to bring this student project to completion - refined in clay and Alias prior to production of physical hard-model.

Original concept by Woosun Chung (placement student), extensive design development and refinement by DCP's in-house team.

Thanks everyone! This DCP Aerocoupe seems to get a lot of (deserved) praise - but again I have to stress that I was just part of the process on this job - there were a lot of other skilled Alias & RTT Visualisation guys on the case - not to mention clay guys and hard-model veterans. . .and let's also not lose sight of the fact that Woosun Chung originated the concept . . I was just one of the CAD-monkeys who helped bring this stunning design to life!

Hi Mike!
great works!

wow love the body lines!

Posted 13 Oct 2009

could you please post the wireframe images so that noobs can get an idea of how this was modelled

Posted 15 Oct 2009

I'd love to - but I don't own the model: it lives in a vault inside VW . . we're not allowed to take our work home with us. The images have reached the public domain, but it's unlikely the data-set ever will - sorry!

Posted 15 Oct 2009

fantastic concept!

Posted 10 Nov 2009

very cool design

Posted 13 Nov 2009

Iam a fan of ur creation!!

Posted 6 Dec 2009

Thanks Gaurav, but the credit must go to Woosung, and all the other VW guys who helped him develop and communicate this very cool design.

Posted 7 Dec 2009

Wow all those beautiful curves.. must have been really hard to model. Wish cars would really look like that someday...

Posted 4 May 2010

Actually, it wasn't such a difficult shape to produce: the groundwork had already been done to get the overall clay volumes working, so it wasn't too much of a challenge to reverse engineer and develop the surfaces.. for sure we did a lot of refinement work based on ongoing input from the Designer- but getting the basics up and running happened in about a week or so.

Posted 11 Jun 2010

Awesome concept if it was made to fly then its even better!

Posted 18 Jun 2010

Wow! Right out of a Bond Movie.

Posted 18 Jun 2010

Nice Modelling work Mike!

As far as constructing the ALIAS surfs . .

Like all my models it starts off as a theoretical volume: a series of closed-shape surfaces which capture the main volumes & intersection points between each body element. Once this is in place, you then build the transitional patches which join up these elements - determining how angular or soft the overall form should look. (bigger transitions give you a softer look - if that makes sense?) Finally you apply the small edge radii, panel splits etc.

Posted 15 Jul 2010

The softer the overall form, the more challenging it is to get the transitional surfaces right, as you're devouring more of the original master surfaces. However, this theoretical volume approach is the only safe and sure way of ensuring you don't end up with a "nasty corner" which you can't sucessfully resolve. At VW they insisted upon this modelling approach at all times, and it never once failed us.

wow.....nice concept mike!

Posted 16 Jul 2010

Hi Mike, Very nice, well rounded portfolio! I can see you are very passionate about designing!

Posted 27 Jul 2010

Cheers James - I've got to confess you're 100% right . . there's only been a few things in life that have ever meant more to me than design . . . for me the fun and passion is in taking the first steps away from sketch and making it work as a properly resolved 3D form - defining something which can be made in the real world.

no words.......mike.....

Posted 6 Aug 2010

heheheeh again great.....!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted 11 Aug 2010

Cheers, Guys . . .

beautiful composition

Posted 10 Sep 2010

Cheers dudes . . glad that this project is still drawing comment . . it's a few years old now.

Posted 23 Sep 2010

Is there any chance to have a front engine car in this style(Upper model)?

Posted 15 Oct 2010

Hi Mahmood - the design and proportions are mid engined - but of course, it would be theoretically possible to develop these styling cues into a Front engined version - but I'm done with this project now, so won't be updating it.
