Acousticafe Coloring Poster - [recyclable coloring poster, original illustration] honorable mention, one-color poster, ACUI Steal This Idea Competition 2009 In a sea of colorful posters, the large amount of white space here stands out. Stressed college students can test the therapeutic powers of coloring before recycling the whole poster. Smart design combined with minimal use of linework, color, and text is transformed into the most interactive and reused poster that hung in the halls that week.
Hope Ministries: Family Pancake Breakfast for Charity - [poster (original 18x24"), photo shoot direction, original event idea] Hope Ministries, a local homeless shelter and rescue mission, needed to create a "signature event." After I toured the facility, it was clear that an ideal event would bring potential donors to visit Hope to see how the homeless lived in the tiny rooms in the shelter, trying to keep families together and getting creative while cooking using only a crock pot and George Foreman grill.
HPC Brochure - [2-sided, 4-panel brochure] The client, Historic Preservation Commission of South Bend & St. Joseph County, needed an identity that reflected the governmental authority of the office while encouraging a sense of friendliness and community.
Weather Graphics - [weather symbol set for The Observer newspaper, 1x1" each] Unified by consistent line weight and illustrative simplicity, the clear symbols read well at the bottom of a busy black and white newspaper page. Subtle details add visual interest without distracting from the basic black outlines. The addition of the "nighttime" set (with moon) makes more sense in context - before, there was no way to report a clear night without resorting to using the sun symbol.
The Shirt Project 2009: Unveiling Ceremony Advertising Campaign - *see website: theshirt.nd.edu [print (original 11x17") and digital posters, logo, stacked shirt photo idea)] Each year, students and alumni gather for an unveiling ceremony to find out the color and design of The Shirt, held secret until that time. The stacked t-shirts show past color choices. Before being hung, the corner of each poster was ripped off right where the 2009 color choice would be named, to increase suspense and anticipation for this year's unveiling.
Living Letters - [advertising campaign (including web banner, postcard, magazine ad, newspaper ad)] An advertising campaign must remain consistent and recognizable through many different media. More than just scaling a single design, the same information may need to be reformatted to fit different ad spaces. This type-only campaign is characterized by a lively spring green background contrasted with purple type that pushes the limits of visual information needed for the letterforms to remain legible.
The Zoo: A Symbolform Design Process Book - [book design] Book about the history of symbolforms and the design process.
The Rome Experience - Eight-page brochure for international distribution to those interested in "The Rome Experience", an annual summer program for diocesan seminarians. Features image selection and heavy retouching, layout and development of template for future issues.
