Draw Up A Chair Project Entry

Below is an excerpt of the original entry to the Battery Park 2012 Draw Up A Chair competition for which this piece was designed.

WORK
The tittle of this project is WORK because it is meant as a tribute to the hard work and dedication of the unsung average working person who built this city. It is a reflection upon the beauty of labor as the foundation which affords us the luxury of our leisure. While being primarily about work there is also a playful or revealing element regarding the use of materials. This is due to an inversion of the typical relationship between the three materials – Stainless Steel Rebar, Perforated Stainless Steel Mesh, and High Strength Fiberglass Reinforced Concrete Composite. Normally rebar and steel mesh are used as internal support structures for concrete but here have been externalized to become the structure while the concrete used as the foot has now become the support for them.
