Tesla Coil
This was a project I led in 2013. I researched Tesla Coils and how to build them, decided on parts, and then built it with a few friends. The total cost of the project was less than $100, with the most expensive part being the 12kV neon sign transformer needed for the primary circuit. The capacitor was built out of a Home Depot bucket, 12 glass bottles (as dielectrics), salt water (for conductive plates), wire, and motor oil (to prevent internal arcing). A bucket capacitor was used because of its durability. The water inside would disperse heat generated within the glass bottles, and because we used glass bottles, it was able to handle the intense voltage through the circuit.
