Biography
Jeroen Zijlstra has always been intrigued by Ray Harryhausen’s filmcreatures in movies such as THE 7TH VOYAGE OF SINBAD and JASON AND THE ARGONAUTS.
He began drawing, filming and animating at an early age, going on to attend Minerva Academy of Visual Arts and Design in Groningen NL (2005) in 2001, studying animation and Media Design.
In his academy years he experimented with various forms of animation such as cell animation and CG animation, just to finally go back again to his great passion, stop-motion. He prefers building real sets, props, armatures and characters and fisically ‘build up’ the animation frame by frame. Using real camera’s, lights and grip.
At that time he made his first completely digitally shot stop-motion animation, AWARENESS. This animation is inspired by his fascination for old expressionistic films from the 1920-ies German cinema and work of people like Tim Burton.
Determined to break into the business, he founded the Holland based animation studio what is now Raspberry Animation in 2004. Two years later he animated and produced several leaders and bumpers for MTV-Networks.
For his animation THE MIRACULOUS PEAR TREE he pionieered the usage of digital SLR camera’s in combination with realtime video preview. This ended up in an animation shot in 2K RAW format. Lateron scaled down to 1080p HD.
