Whittle Cones

Whittle cones were designed by Walter Jack Studio in memory of Frank Whittle.

I engineered and made the pieces.
Each cone is made from 11 pairs of laser cut and cnc routed 5mm aluminium profiles.

They are joined by 6mm countersunk rivets where the flanges of the profiles overlap. Manipulation of these flanges to the correct angle is the difficult element of this project. By clamping each individual joint seperately and manipulating via clamps and beating the constantly varying flange angles could be formed.

The pieces were temporarily bolted together before replacing with rivets which were carefully flushed.

Polycarbonate bumpers were required to make leading edges safe in public space.
