Russell McGorman was born in a in a small remote mining town in Central British Columbia’s Slocan Valley. For his eight birthday, he received a Walter Foster drawing kit complete with a collection of charcoal sticks, conté and graphite pencils, a sketch pad and a Walter foster “How To Draw Landscapes” book. He’s been hooked on drawing ever since. Eventually, Russell graduated high-school with an Eagle Northwrite scholarship for drawing, and entered the Ontario College of Art (OCA ?— Now called OCAD), where he studied design and fine art. Mostly fine art.
Graduating from OCA with three more scholarships Russell went on to work as a welder, a skill picked up in sculpture classes at OCA and one that came in handy between his graduation and his entry in to the world of design.
His entry into the world of design began at Multiple Arts, a small, but very busy silk-screen printing shop with diverse output ranging from displays for the Royal Ontario Museum and Art Gallery of Ontario, trade show displays, and television and film props. Russell spent a lot of time hand lettering and hand-cut lettering for silkscreen stencils, Russell developed an abiding love and appreciation for typography and the art of lettering.
In 1985, Russell had the opportunity to work for Go Transit, (a major regional transit agency in the Toronto area) as a signage designer and fabricator. Having always been a strong believer in working for the pubic good and in the important role played by public transit in building sustainable and livable cities, Russell has been proud to contribute the success of the organization over the years.
Shortly after starting to work for GO, Russell began and continues to run his part time freelance design business, allowing an outlet for his more creative side. He has also continued to paint and draw and now includes designing and publishing typefaces in his repertoire.
His experience years ago, as a welder fabricating things like weigh scales for trucks and trains and giant conveyor systems for factories and mines continues to inform much of his thinking on design and art. He likes things that have a function—Things that have a purpose and are bigger than ourselves. To Russell, the aesthetics of an object are not genuine if there is “nothing under the hood”. Then it's just styling.
Russell brings along with his 30 years' experience in the design business his skills as an artist and technician and his dedication to delivering the best possible results to his work with with graphics design, environmental design, wayfindng, retail signage and project management and type design.
