From the Ritz to the Rubble

As part of a group of 3 students we created an exhibit that told the story of Nottingham's Ritz cinema. The story of this building is linked with that of Nottingham itself; opening in 1933, becoming one of the first of Oscar Deutsch's Odeon chain in 1939, hosting the Beatles in the 60's, the demolition of the beautiful Art Deco interior for conversion to a multiplex in the 80's to its closure, demolition and redevelopment as student housing in the 2010's.

We decided to pay homage to the memory of the Ritz by presenting the exhibit as a projection. We converted an old slide projector into a grand carousel, found one of the last remaining slide printers in the Midlands, and create a plaster cast of the original interior as a ruin. We then projected our slides onto the ruin, making an interactive exhibit for our Unit exhibition.
