Design Management Competency
the Coherence between Design- and Corporate Strategy

An exploratory study of the competence-based development of business strengths through design management and the resulting long-term positioning of companies in the German-speaking market.

Design supports customers in making the final buying decisions for an increasing variety of homogeneous products, influences the image of manufacturers and guarantees constant brand quality. Design is a widely accepted tool for differentiation which provides companies with the source of sustainable competitive advantage in international markets. But the underlying question is how to implement the design paradigm into rigid business structures?
Numerous inefficient business processes fell victim to the prevalent outsourcing-trend of the last decades. After realizing the danger of allocating internal competences in an organization to competitors, a decision to return to the company’s main activities and capabilities was made. This idea was introduced by Prahalad/Hamel in their papers on resource-based-views and theories of core-competences, originating from former Japanese marketing models. The core competency focuses on companies’ resources as a crucial factor for the achievement of competitive advantage. Porter’s market strategies consequently receive an underlying extension by now including internal business aspects besides external ones.
This exploratory study was carried out in collaboration with the research lab DE|RE|SA of Salzburg University of Applied Sciences. The intention of this study is to investigate knowledge about the importance of integrated design management, its positive impact on competitive positioning as well as the devolving value transfer to business units by German-speaking organizations. This paper attempts to consolidate the synergetic effects of design management and core-competence management and introduces a new term known as “design management competency”. The implementation of design management in existing company structures as well as the focus on internal non-substitutable, non-immitigable core competencies generate a holistic match of business- and design strategies. This study is based upon 20 quantitative interviews with design and marketing experts from companies with an above-average rating for their design reputation in Germany, Austria as well as Switzerland.
