Existing front yard with poorly trimmed shrubs and weed filled front lawn. Property is being used as an Air B&B so owners wanted to improve its curbside appearance.
River shape drawn into the dirt as a guide for digging out soil and placement of rocks.
New landscaping was requested by client wanting to improve parking strip environment to better accent a new home and front rockeries, creating a more attractive street presence.
All grass removed and fill dirt brought in to construct garden mounds, and to shape for river bed development.
Client requested a cobblestone pathway to be incorporated into the garden design leading from the curb to the sidewalk as a direct access from her car.
The following photos were taken one year later, mulch has been spread over the topsoil, and a plastic edging installed to limit surface matter washing onto sidewalk and driveway areas.
Next door neighbor to previous project shown, also expressed an interest in having their parking strip landscaped to improve the overall appearance of their front yard. I designed a solution that continued the river dry bed concept into their space with a large scale mound to act as an ending point, and a visual barrier to the adjoining yard's unattractive planter boxes.
Client's front yard needed a complete new design direction as previous owner had excavated yard to install a sprinkler system, and then left it in an unfinished state. Client was looking for something that suggested a subtle English garden look that included existing border gardens, a lawn space for children's activities, a patio, and a privacy hedge along the street.
Front corner of yard showing a hedge that would be removed, creating an open and exposed space facing the street that would be filled with a wood picket fence transferred from the back of the yard to the front. A row of arborvitae trees would be planted inside the fenced space to provide a subtle visual barrier hedge that was not a solid wall.
View looking at partial lawn installation and arborvitae trees with patio space defined in lower corner prior to installation.
Patio space defined that represents a 8 foot by ten foot space consisting of one foot square aggregate border tiles, and two foot square concrete center stones.
Corner planter box would be removed and garden spaces better defined around the focal point tree and border gardens through the use of flagstone as an edging element.
Careful attention was devoted to the design and positioning of the flagstone pieces to create an arrangement that fit well physically, and was aesthetically pleasing in its appearance. Ground cover seed will be planted in the Spring to fill the gaps between these stones, with a dense green or purple leaf ground cover that will soften the appearance of the stone's hard edges, and create a more blended environment that will compliment the existing gardens and the period architecture and design of both the home and it's traditional picket fencing.
