Automata . Lamp
MeLikey

Description

The Automata Lamp is a dynamic, ever changing fixture that can run autonomously or react to its surroundings. Using a BASIC Stamp computer, the halogen bulbs act as a one-dimensional grid system like in Conway’s cellular automata Game of Life. A small life system begins very dim in just one light, and as it grows, it spreads from one light to the next. As the colony grows, the lights mechanically spread open to engage a larger portion of the room. Life and death is dictated by programmed rules in BASIC.
This lamp can exist in two environments. The first is devoid of stimulation, like a waiting room. In this situation, the light is left to run on its own, with no external stimulation. It acts as a point of interest and conversation for those waiting, as well as providing the necessary light for a room. The Automata can also function in any open office, studio, or creative environment where interaction is important. In this situation, the colony’s growth is limited by the general feeling of the space it’s in, sampled and interpreted through sound. Mounted above a desk, it provides downward light when a person is quietly working, but when co-workers enter and as conversation grows, so does the light. The Automata Light not only responds to a dynamic environment, it contributes to it.
