Tyrrell wtyrrell@collegeforcreativestudies.edu Education 2005-2010 BFA in Crafts: Interdisciplinary/Furniture Design College for Creative Studies (CCS) Detroit, MI Work Experience 8/11-Present Woodshop Technician – College for Creative Studies, Detroit, MI Responsible include helping oversee the wood shop facilities while assisting in the training of students, staff, and faculty in the safe and effective use of wood shop as well as assisting in routine and unanticipated maintenance of shop tools and equipment on regular basis. Supervision of student work study, ensuring proper shop use, keeping a clean and effective work space, and ensuring OSHA safety regulations throughout the shop. 5/11-Present Instructor, 3D Design Concepts and Techniques – College for Creative Studies, Detroit, MI Requirements for 3D Concepts include but are not limited to: Introduction of the elements, principles, vocabulary, and mechanics of 3D design, as well as detailed exploration and application of color theory to students. Enhance the exploration of design concepts through lectures, discussions, hands on studio assignments and critiques while guiding the students through such processes as layout, scale, and ergonomics. Requirements for 3D Techniques include but are not limited to: Introduction to a wide variety of fabrication and construction techniques to new students in the wood, metal, and model shop. Guide students through a series of project that will familiarize them with the majority of machines and tools within the shops. Reinforce methods and techniques used to safely and properly complete projects in the future. 12/10-8/11 Conservation Specialist and Collections Management --The Henry Ford, Dearborn, MI Requirements include but not limited to: Advanced skill in art and crafts such as mold making, casting, carpentry, painting, photography, color matching, ceramics, sculpture, metalworking, matting and framing and the use of Argus, an established computerized collections management system. Completing examinations and conservation treatments under the direction of a conservator, as well as the documentation of conservation treatments. Maintains assigned lab areas in a clean and safe condition. Performing maintenance on specialized lab equipment and tools. Preparation of adhesives, chemicals, and solvent mixtures for treatments on artifacts. Contributes to the effective team management of all problems, issues and opportunities concerning the conservation department. 10/10-5/11 Instructor, Sculpture and 3D Form --CCS Community Arts Partnership Detroit, MI Explore fundamentals of sculpture and guide students towards projects that will achieve their goals through proper methods and techniques. Development of curriculum and lesson plans that will be applied to a wide range of students with varied abilities and skill levels. Keeping students in grades 6-12 engaged in a creative environment. 10/09-Present Gallery Assistant --Next Step Studio Ferndale, MI Handle production, sales, and material orders for gallery, as well as arrangement of space and work at national shows. In charge of custom fabrication and installation of projects/art in gallery and client’s homes. 5/05-3/10 Work Study --CCS Woodshop Detroit, MI Machine Repair/Shop Maintenance as well as guidance with student projects. Maintaining of shop safety (OSHA/Red Cross) over the students and faculty. 1/08-1/09 Custom Furniture/Cabinet Maker -- A Notch Above Inc., Oak Park, MI Interpret designers blue prints for production pieces as well as custom orders. Completed the fabrication process of rough materials, from milling to finishing and installation of work in businesses and client’s homes. 9/06-11/09 Artist/Fabricator --The Parade Company Detroit, MI Complete wood and metal fabrication of sculptures involving structural welding, rolling chaises, animatronics, armatures and props. Responsible for shop and tool maintenance as well as custom fabrication of tools and jigs. Projects 8/13 1st National Bldg. lobby – Custom furniture 5/13 CAMP Detroit Movement Festival – Pharos3 Select artist for national music festival sculpture project. Designer and fabricator of 20’ tall steel sculpture displayed at multiple venues. 7/12 Shinola Detroit – Conference table A “new” company, Shinola, developed part of their commercial manufacturing space based in the A. Alfred Taubman Center for Design Education Detroit. In conjunction with the design team we were able to build a fully functioning work space for design and manufacturing. 8/10 Detroit Design Festival -- D’s Creatures Creator and lead artist for proposed happening that included 12 artists, 10 sculptures, and a fashion show. Locating and set up of temporary studio/gallery space, acquisition of materials, and sponsors. In charge of finding sponsorship, meeting deadlines, and publicity. 1/10-4/10 The Chair Project --Henry Ford Academy: School for Creative Studies Lead design and fabrication consultant on project. Instructed 9th grade students the aspects of design and material choice in furniture construction as well as fabrication fundamentals. The winning design was built at CCS and shown at the Henry Ford Museum and Alfred Taubman Design School.
