REX Hospital for a site visit and talked to the Surgeon and operating staff. I try on and work with the current headlamp designs. The surgeon positions the large overhead spotlights. Even with the over head spotlights, shadows are cast on the operating table.
The surgeon demonstrates the current headlamps. A team mate tries on the headlamp with the fiber optic cable running down his back. The nurses help to correctly focus the headlamps' beam of light.

The Headlamp fiber optic cable plugs into a large microwave sized "light box" which is plugged into the wall and the entire thing becomes very hot.

Eye protective glasses with LED light bulbs mounted to them with a cord connecting them to a battery pack attached to the waist of the surgeon. The battery packs can be swapped out for immediate power replacement. The battery pack shows read out of how much battery is remaining. The cord attaching the glasses to the battery pack passes underneath the surgeons scrubs, this allows for the cord mounted controls to be sterile for touching and adjusting during surgery. The controls would include On/Off, intensity, brightness, size and focal length.
The IPhone Belt clip is a wireless power receiver, which picks up the signal transmitted by the wireless power transmitter, which is plugged into the wall, and continuously broadcasting power up to 300 feet. The IPhone power receiver will convert the signal that it picks up into electricity that can charge the IPhone battery and power the LED lights all at once. The power supply will be semi-constant with the IPhone battery as a back-up power supply. The cord attaching the glasses to the battery pack passes underneath the surgeons scrubs, this allows for the cord mounted controls to be sterile for touching and adjusting during surgery.
Adjustable direction of light, wearable battery pack on waist-band or arm under scrubs for sanitation purposes.
Golden Features: Using iPhone as battery Pack and Controls. Disposable Lenses or Prescription lens replacements. Cree LED Ultra bright lights. Accelerometer turns off the lights when the doctor looks up, saves battery, and not shine in nurses eyes.
Built working prototype. Cree LED lights. Removable lenses, battery pack.
Our team won second place in the graduate division of the "Leadership & Innovation Showcase '11" --- Multi-disciplinary student team that developed a new LED headlamp, incorporated into eyeglasses that can be fitted with prescription lenses. The device was developed provide surgeons enhanced lighting of target areas during surgical procedures.
